Brands on the Street:
- Patagonia: I love Patagonia, I am into the outdoors. I was there a few months ago. I feel like Patagonia sets you apart. I am not into status or anything, but this brand says something about who you are. It gives me a sense of identity.
- Keds: I heard they were comfortable and I went to a discount store that sells them. If these were not Keds I would not have bought them. There were other shoes of similar quality but I recognized the brand and I had seen other friends wearing them. I don’t watch a lot of TV and ads..and stuff, so I am not sure how I first heard of Keds.
- Kenneth Cole: my mom got this for me because she thought it was good. It was a bit more expensive so you know it is going to be good (interesting, tell us more)…well, at least you would hope it would be better.
Impact on Society (these brands or others)
So, I know that for instance, Nike and the workers and, like the fact that they have issues with workers in developing countries. Walmart has the same problems.
I also volunteered in Honduras and spoke to workers for Dole [Foods]. The workers said they had trouble with their skins…and like, giving birth. And even though I know that and consider myself a socially conscious person, I still buy Dole Pineapple and I don’t know why (pineapple addiction, perhaps?)
Are you aware of any “shared value” imparted by these brands?
Patagonia is very socially conscious. Target donates a portion of money to charity as well, you just need to click on something (we are not really sure what she means, but Target does have a charitable history)
Did shared value drive these purchasing decisions in any way?
Yes, I feel like I pick the more socially responsible brands (except Dole)
Aside from purchasing decisions, is there any way you personally try to do good in the world?
I donate a percentage of my money to my church. My parents taught me that 10% of your income should go to charity. Also, my dad is an accountant so I ask him to donate some of my money. I also donate my time, and coupled with the money it equals 10%…or something.
