Brands on the Street:
Madewell, Levi’s, and True&Co.
Why those brands?
You caught me on a good day. I’m feeling pretty good about my outfit. Madewell speaks to me. It represents who I am but also who I want to be. Levi’s has a classic Americana vibe that I like, and I like the way they fit and feel. Oh, you know what? They’re not Levi’s, they’re Lucky Brand! That’s embarrassing. So clearly the brand mattered a little less. And I like these shoes because they’re classic, easy-to-wear-with-every-kind-of-outfit shoes.
Are you aware of any shared value offered by these brands?
I know Madewell believes in ethically sourcing fabrics for their denim and things like that. I don’t know about Lucky Brand or True&Co. I don’t think so. Generally it’s a nice-to-have but not a need-to-have.
Does the shared value contribute to your decision to buy Madewell?
I would say so. I feel like the quality is a little bit higher and you pay a little more. There’s less of an impact if the supply chain is conscious of the environmental footprint.
Do you participate in any charitable organizations?
I do. I’m on the board of a nonprofit in the Mission. It’s a social justice organization focused on bringing academic opportunities to disenfranchised groups. It is academic- and education- focused. Outside of that, I volunteer in my local park. We have a clean-up and greening project one Saturday a month.
